2016-17 Wildcat Athletics Contract

It is a privilege, not a right, to represent Wise School on the Wildcats Athletics teams. The athlete must earn this privilege through dedication, desire, and discipline. Students who maintain their eligibility by meeting academic and behavioral expectations throughout the school year earn this privilege. The following paragraphs explain Wise School’s Athletic Code.

Team Participation

All students who wish to participate in after-school sports at Wise School in Grades 4-6 are eligible. The Athletic department has instituted a clear ‘no cut’ policy which guarantees that any student who signs up to participate in an after school athletic program, will be assigned to a team.

Commitment

As a member of a team, an athlete is expected to attend all scheduled try-outs, practices, games and team meetings. If circumstances arise whereby the student cannot attend a try-out, practice, team meeting or game, the coach must be notified prior to the absence.

Try-Out Policy

  • Tryouts to determine which team suits each student’s level of ability and experience in each sport. Wise School may field up to three different levels of teams for each sport.
  • Students are expected to be at all tryouts. Students who miss tryouts are in jeopardy of being placed on a team not consistent with their skill level.
  • Parents are responsible for working out logistical issues associated with their child playing a sport at Wise School. If it becomes evident that it is not logistically possible for a student to participate in the sport they are trying out for, the parent must contact the Athletic Department immediately.
  • At the conclusion of the tryout period, each student will be placed on a team. Once a player has been placed on a team, he/she will be expected to honor their commitment to the team.
  • Please note: If an athlete quits the team at any point after try-outs and the team roster has been set then he/she will not be allowed to participate in the next sports season at the discretion of the athletic staff. For example: If a student quits or is removed from a winter sports team, he/she will not be allowed to play the next sport they decide to try out for.

Practice Attendance and Playing Time

  • Athletes need to attend all practices and games scheduled.
  • Only family emergencies are considered excused absences.
  • Playing time is at the discretion of the coach based on several factors, including attendance, skill, team chemistry, game situations, etc.
  • Excessive absences from team practices or games or may be cause for removal from the team.

Athletics Forms

The athlete must have the following forms completed and on file with the school in order to play:

  • Emergency Medical Form (Submitted via Magnus)
  • Athletic Contract (Submitted by both parent and student)

Academic Eligibility and Conduct

To maintain athletic eligibility, an athlete must meet or exceed the standards set by the Wise School instructional staff for academic eligibility:

  • If a student’s academic performance declines or incidents of negative behavior occur, a report will be sent to the Athletic Department. They will communicate with the child and his/her parents/guardians.
  • A decision will be made whether to issue a warning and put the child on academic/behavioral probation, remove the student from the athletic team, or deny him/her permission to sign up for future athletic events.
  • Any action taken which affects a student’s participation in the athletics program will be based upon what is in the best interest of the child and the team, in the opinion of the school administration.
  • All athletes will be expected to govern his/her conduct in accordance with the rules and regulations of the Wise Student/Parent Handbook and must understand that violation of the student’s obligations under the Wise Student/Parent Handbook may result in removal from competitive athletics.
  • The Athletic Department has zero tolerance for lack of respect for officials, other school teams, other cultures, coaches, parents or fans.

Student Pick-Up

  • Parents are responsible for transportation arrangements for their child to be picked up at the end of practices and games. Late pick-ups on more than two occasions may cause suspension or dismissal from the team.
  • Parents may pick up athletes from the American Jewish University (AJU) when they have a home game or practice there (Football and Soccer). Otherwise, athletes will be walked back up to regular carpool at Wise School.

Communications Procedure

If you have a concern about your child’s team, first contact Coach Hosler. If after this conversation you need to speak to someone else, please contact our Assistant Head of School, Pam Kleinman.
