Dear 1st Grade Parents,

This week in 1st grade math we continued to work on numbers 1-10. We are looking at numbers that are greater and less than each other within numbers 1-10, as well as practicing our number formation. We began our social studies unit on representative vs. direct democracy and the students had an opportunity to use direct democracy to vote on our class activity. We also introduced the “Golden Rule” – ask your child how they follow this! Our spelling and phonics pattern for the week was short “e.”

Below please find the reminders for the upcoming week in 1st grade, including our Picture Day schedule.

Dear 2nd Grade Parents,

2nd graders have been familiarizing themselves with the Wise Learning Process and reading comprehension strategies. This week they focused on making predictions while reading, proving those predictions with evidence, and verifying them. They also worked on metacognition (thinking about their thinking) and visualizing.

Next week’s spelling pattern will focus on words with the short ‘i’ vowel. We will also be reviewing the writing process, focusing on main ideas and supporting details in a structured paragraph about fall.

In Hebrew, students have been practicing their vocabulary and studying the Hebrew letters ב ר ד. Next week they will continue with their letters and start with new vocabulary for Rosh Hashanah. In Judaic Studies next week, students will be learning about Rosh Hashanah and reflecting on themselves and their behavior.

Warmly,

The 2nd Grade Teachers

Dear 4th Grade Parents,

As we move forward in our study of the regions in California, students will be learning details about each region’s climate, natural resources, vegetation, and geography. This activity will culminate in a project that will include narrative writing and artistic representation of one region. Students will conduct research using many references, organize new ideas, and use depth and complexity icons to closely examine the text. We look forward to helping students learn about some of the scholarly traits, while learning about the land around us.

Dear 6th Grade Parents,

In addition to working on our personal narratives in writing and learning about early humans in social studies, this week in 6th grade we are gearing up for our retreat! We can’t wait to spend the day working on teamwork and building trust within our grade level community. Among many activities, we will play on the ropes course, pray together Friday morning overlooking the Pacific Ocean, and hike from Hilltop Camp down to Camp Hess Kramer. It is definitely one of the highlights of the entire year!

Next week we will be using photographs to generate ideas for our personal narratives in writing. In Hebrew we will continue to learn about the Jewish artifacts that represent our families.
