All School News – October 31, 2016

Dear Kindergarten Parents,

Last week students learned about a variety of creative thinking skills! We had a class discussion and talked about what it means to be creative and the different ways that we can be creative. We learned some key words they can use when thinking creatively. These words are: maximize, minimize, add-to, re-arrange, substitute, and combine. Students were given a paper with a shape or a line and were tasked with finding a way to turn the shape or line into a picture. They showed their creative side by coming up with some great ideas for their pictures!

Our letter of the week last week was “S.” Students learned how to formally write the lowercase “s.” We also learned about the season of fall and talked about all the things that we use our 5 senses for in the fall. Students used these ideas to make a “Fall is…” book. Lastly, we had literacy centers where they practiced a variety of skills focusing on rhyming, letter and sound recognition, and building consonant-vowel-consonant (cvc) words (i.e. cat, hat).

In math we started chapter 3, where students were ordering objects by size. Students used the words same size, different size, biggest, middle-sized, and smallest to describe different objects.

In Hebrew we learned about Sukkot and Simchat Torah. We also learned the names of the different symbols that we see during Sukkot. Students made flags that they used to celebrate during our Simchat Torah service.

We’re looking forward to meeting with you in conferences next week.

Warmly,

The Kindergarten Teachers

Dear 2nd Grade Parents,

This past week, 2nd graders learned about the different aspects of a presidential election. Using the Wise Learning Process, they organized their information with details, language of the discipline, and even how the election has changed over time. They also have been learning about the requirements to become President of the United States, and the different jobs that the President holds.

In Judaic Studies, 2nd graders have been studying about the different customs and traditions that take place during Sukkot and Simchat Torah. We celebrated the joy of having the Torah and starting to read it all over again.

Dear 3rd Grade Parents,

Last week in 3rd grade the children learned about the 2016 election. They conducted independent research to complete a concentric circle which showcased what they learned about the details of the election process, specific vocabulary about elections, rules about becoming president, and how elections—as well as the voting process—have changed over time. Each child demonstrated their ability to think critically while using the depth and complexity icons to guide their research.

We’re looking forward to meeting with you in conferences next week.

Dear 5th Grade Parents,

Continuing with the Big Idea “Conflict Between Man and His Environment Create Change,” students are analyzing 7 different Native American Cultural Regions, and how these Native American groups adapted to each unique environment using the natural resources around them. Taking what they’ve learned in writing, including hooks, thesis or topic sentences, and transition sentences, students will work in groups to create their first expository essay of the year (an alternate assessment for this chapter).

Outside of our class, we’re excited to start our partnership with Jason Meth in Project Studio! Starting next week, we’ll be going in, class by class, to research a little about the Electoral College, and the part it will play in our upcoming Presidential Election. PARENTSwe need your help with this experience! Please see the Project Studio note (below) and take the short survey or click HERE to take it. The results directly influence your child’s experience in Project Studio!

We’re looking forward to meeting with you in conferences next week.

Dear 6th Grade Parents,

Besides reading, writing, social studies, and math, our 6th graders have also been taking elective classes. In Current Events, the students are delving into the upcoming election. They are debating various issues such as immigration, taxes, and global warming. These are healthy discussions that focus only on the issues, and not on the candidates.

In World Cultures, the students are currently focusing on Latin America. They created slides about different countries and presented them to the class.

Lastly, in Board Games, the students have started the design component of the process. Boards, question cards, and tokens are being made!

We’re looking forward to meeting with you in conferences next week.
