All School News – November 21, 2016

Dear Kindergarten Parents,

Last week we learned about the election by having our own election in class. Students took part in voting for their favorite Thanksgiving food (turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, or pumpkin pie). They had the chance to vote in private and drop their ballot in the ballot box. We then tallied the results and for both classes, pumpkin pie was the winner! After tallying the votes, students were able to make and write their own conclusion about the data.

Our focus letter was “c” and we formally practiced writing the lowercase “c.” Students also had literacy centers where they practiced a variety of skills focusing on matching upper and lowercase letters, matching pictures with the beginning sounds, identifying missing letters, rhyming, and sorting pictures by 1 or 2 syllables.

In math, we learned that we can use our fingers to help count or represent a set of objects. We used math words such as one more, same, more, and how many more to compare different groups of objects.

In Hebrew we continued learning about family. Students were able to identify who is in their house and practiced with pretend phone conversations asking each other who is in the house. Next week we will continue to practice having phone conversations using our friends names.

Warmly,

The Kindergarten Teachers

Dear 1st Grade Parents,

This week we continued to learn about “bossy e,” with our focus on “e” and “u”. In reading we are learning how to make “bullseye” predictions by using the clues we know about a story to make an educated guess of what we think will happen. In math we are beginning our chapter on subtraction with numbers from 1-10. In grammar we are learning about what makes a complete sentence, including uppercase letters at the beginning, making complete thoughts, and using an end mark.

We are very excited for Thanksgiving and we are having fun preparing for and telling the history of the holiday.

We are also hard at work rehearsing for our Light Up Literacy performance on December 16th. Mark your calendars – it will be an event you won’t want to miss!

Dear 2nd Grade Parents,

Second graders have begun to dig deeply into the subject of immigration and pilgrims while reading the books The Long Way To A New Land and Molly’s Pilgrim. They identified the power that influenced the families in both books to want to move to America. In addition, the students wrote about the change that each family experienced as a result of this move. The students have also been introduced to persuasive writing, setting the stage to write a persuasive paragraph about a turkey that does not want to be eaten.

In Hebrew, our 2nd graders continue to work on letters, vowels, and the writing process. They are very excited to start the new “Keshet” book. They will now be able to share their knowledge of reading with you.

This week in Judaic Studies 2nd graders have been exploring the ethical issue of whether or not Jonah was a real hero. We have explored character traits that heroes demonstrate and discussed what kind of power Jonah had in order to make a change on the people of Nineveh. There are two sides to this story….multiple perspectives…was Jonah a hero or not?

Warmly,

The 2nd Grade Teachers

Dear 3rd Grade Parents,

In preparation for next week, the 3rd graders have started to think about what Midor L’dor means to them. Since Midor L’dor is a celebration of generations, the children decided to write “I Come From…” poems. The poems show that the children understand how their family, as well as their family’s history, has influenced them and continues to influence them as people. Make sure to ask your child where they come from!

This week in Judaic Studies, 3rd grade students are continuing to dig deeply to better understand the Bible. They learned that the Torah is only the first part of the Bible and that there are many interesting details to learn about it. They are learning about the parts of the Torah and the special care and respect it requires.

This week our Hebrew classes are working diligently on their communicative skills. Students are talking about their birthdays and their school, continuing to practice their reading skills, and they are practicing the Toda song in honor of Thanksgiving.

Warmly,

The 3rd Grade Teachers

Dear 4th Grade Parents,

Last week, we continued our Native American unit in order to prepare for our test on Monday (11/21) and Tuesday (11/22). We also went to the book fair and heard Stuart Gibbs speak about the books he wrote and how he became an author. The students were very engaged and had many interesting questions for him to answer. In math, we are continuing our work on fractions!

In Hebrew, the 4th graders focused on the Hebrew speech patterns of “Yesh le…” (… have) and “Ein le…” (…Don’t have). They used these language patterns when describing their grandparents and family members as part of our Hebrew Midor L’dor writing project.

In Judaic Studies, we are focusing on Moses and the impact of his leadership.

Our entire 4th grade community is looking forward to Praying with Parents this Friday, November 18th. This is a special time for our 4th graders to connect spirituality with their guests by their side.

Warmly,

The 4th Grade Teachers

Dear 5th Grade Parents,

Just a reminder that our chapter 4 social studies test is Friday, November 18th. In class, we’ve been reviewing with Quizlet, inductive reasoning sorts, and using critical thinking and expository writing skills to respond to the prompt: As an archaeologist, what was the most important object in the Age of Exploration?

Our next social studies chapter, chapter 5, will be a quick overview of specific explorers, and an introduction to colonization. A short assessment will follow.

After Thanksgiving Break, all reading classes will begin their second novels; more information to follow. And girls, let’s get excited about Puber-Tea, Tuesday, November 29th at 2:10 p.m. On that day, girls will not have PE, but will instead attend an informative, yet light-hearted “tea” with their moms and our wonderful science teachers.

On Tuesday we had a special treat when the Early Childhood Hebrew Immersion students visited us during our Hebrew class. Our 5th graders and the EC Hebrew Immersion students sang songs to each other in Hebrew, watched a video about the song and read the words from a text. In anticipation of our upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, they also learned a song in Hebrew about a Turkey. The 5th graders and EC students bonded so quickly and easily – it was a wonderful experience for all the children.

In Judaic Studies, students will be exploring Ashkenazi and Sephardic Jews and the three major movements within Judaism. This week we are honoring Jackyln Ghalili and Alexa Simantob as our Klei Kodesh leaders.

Warmly,

The 5th Grade Teachers

Dear 6th Grade Parents,

In social studies, we are practicing writing an expository essay using the content students learned about the Sumerians – the problems they faced in their environment and the solutions they devised to overcome them. In this essay, they are expected to include historical evidence to validate their claims.

In writing, the students are learning about the different types of verbs and how to identify them within a sentence. Using proper verb structure and maintaining the correct tenses will enhance their writing.

This week in Hebrew, we continued to work on reading with accuracy and correct pronunciation. The ultimate goal is to empower the students to read with confidence. We emphasized speaking in full sentences and paid close attention to the parts of speech, as well as the order in which they appear in Hebrew sentences. In honor of Thanksgiving and our Midor L’dor celebration, we are learning deeply about Jewish artifacts and precious possessions that were passed down through the generations. As part of the Wise Learning Process, the focus is on describing these items in details, showing noticeable trends, and following the relationships over time.

We are looking forward to performing at Midor L’dor with our Kindergarten buddies next week!
